About the Band
The Southern Dance Orchestra has been through many changes in its life. Originally the band started as an evening class and members met together to play after the class ended. Gradually the band developed, with new members bringing in more expertise.
Now the band is flourishing with members who have played for 50 years, and some a lot less!
Band members are drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. Our line-up includes people from local industry, self-employed businesses, professional musicians, and pretty much everything in between! What they all have in common is an enthusiasm for live performance and playing the music of the big band era.
We are based in the Portsmouth area and have a local gig base, playing at pubs and private club venues in Portsmouth, Gosport, Purbrook, Hayling Island and Lee-on-Solent.
Musical Director Ken Howell has worked in big bands for over fifty years, and brings a wealth of expertise to the band. Our bassist/vocalist, Pete Jackson, adds an extra touch of class and complements the band’s sound beautifully.
The SDO offers a treat to anyone who appreciates the live sound of real music. The band has a wide repertoire of arrangements, from swing to strict tempo for ballroom dancing, as well as modern standards.
